The award-winning emWave® PC system (formerly known as the Freeze-Framer®) is a software and hardware program that collects pulse data through a finger or ear clip sensor that plugs into your computer. Question 10: Is the emWave technology like biofeedback?
This technology is a heart rhythm coherence feedback system. It is important to understand that there are many types of biofeedback which all feed back different aspects of physiological changes in our body. The simplest form of biofeedback is looking in a mirror and making different faces.
emWave program is quite different from other forms of technology-based biofeedback such as heart rate, skin conductance or brain waves. emWave PC is an educational tool that provides feedback of a person's heart rhythm patterns which, in turn, allows them to see and better understand how stress and different emotions are affecting their autonomic nervous system dynamics. It does this by measuring the naturally occurring changes in beat-to-beat heart rate, which is called heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, or simply, analysis of the heart rhythm. Whereas common methods of HRV analysis typically quantify the amount of variability in a given recording, additional information can be gained by heart rhythm pattern analysis, which is unique to the patented technology in the emWave PC.
Research has shown that sustained positive emotions lead to a highly efficient and regenerative functional mode associated with increased coherence in heart rhythm patterns and greater synchronization and harmony among physiological systems. The patented emWave PC system monitors heart rhythm patterns and helps people develop skills to maintain states of increased physiological coherence. The use of pulse wave sensors makes this technology extremely versatile, time-efficient, and easy to use in a wide variety of settings. As people practice coherence building techniques, they can readily see and experience the changes in their heart rhythm patterns, which generally become less irregular, smoother, and more sine wave-like as the individual enters the coherent mode.
